Industrial silicon, also known as silicon metal or silicon metalloid, is a trade name that emerged in the mid-sixties of this century. It is a product obtained by the reduction of silica (SiO₂) and carbonaceous reducing agents (such as petroleum coke, washed coal, charcoal, etc.) in a submerged arc furnace, and the content of the main component silicon element is about 98% (in recent years, the Si content is 99.99%.The rest of the impurities are iron, aluminum, calcium, etc.
Industrial silicon has a wide range of uses, mainly including the following aspects:
1. Semiconductor manufacturing
Industrial silicon is a key raw material for the manufacture of integrated circuits, solar cells, LEDs, and other electronic components. Its high purity and specific electrical properties make it ideal for semiconductor materials.
2. Chemical industry
Industrial silicon is an important raw material for the production of silicone-based compounds such as silicone, silicone rubber, silicone oil, and silicone resin. These compounds are used in a wide range of applications in the manufacture of sealants, lubricants, coatings, plastics, and medical products.
3. Metal smelting
Industrial silicon can be used as a reducing agent in metal smelting, reducing the oxygen content in metal ores and improving the purity of the metal.
4. Aluminum alloy industry

5. Photovoltaic industry
Industrial silicon is purified through a series of processes to produce polysilicon and monocrystalline silicon, which are used in the photovoltaic industry. The classification of industrial silicon is mainly based on factors such as silicon content, impurity content, and particle size. According to the national standard (GB/T 2881-2014), industrial silicon is divided into 5530#, 4410#, and 4210 according to the difference in silicon content and the content of three main impurities, iron, aluminum, and calcium#, 3303#, 2202# and other specifications.
The production process of industrial silicon mainly includes steps such as reduction, refining, and thin film growth. First, silica and carbonaceous reducing agent are added to the furnace for high-temperature heating, so that the carbon and silica can fully react to generate carbon monoxide and silicon. Then, the smelted silicon metal is refined to remove impurities. Finally, silicon particles are deposited on the surface of the substrate through thin film growth technology to form a continuous silicon film.
